What will I study & how will I be assessed?
Creative iMedia is a vocational qualification, which means that the topics are similar to real-life situations. There are three coursework units worth 25% each: Creating Graphics (using Photoshop CS6), Interactive Multimedia Products (which could be Flash programs, games, presentations or web pages) and Creating Animation (using Flash CS6). There is one exam (25%), which looks at how the media industry plan and prepare media products – such as storyboards and visual diagrams. Creative iMedia can supplement GCSE Computer Science, for pupils who really love to be very creative on computers in addition to learning about how it all works.
What will I do in lessons?
Although the subject is largely practical, with pupils creating a variety of products across a range of programs, pupils will also look into good working practices on a computer and law such as Copyright, Trade Marks and the Data Protection Act. Pupils this year have used Photoshop to make a cover for a science fiction novel, PowerPoint to make multimedia products for a health club and gym, or visiting a city, and a Flash animation to promote a new energy drink product in a positive way. Pupils will learn how to design too, creating sketch plans, storyboards, mood boards etc, following how professional designers plan and make their products to industry standards.
Where can Computer Science take me?
Pupils who are interested in the field of design in using a computer will find the course very valuable. Some colleges offer the Level 3 version of the qualification, and careers include web design, graphic design and even film making. Basically, any creative career would be supported by studying this course.
